{"id":1359,"date":"2021-11-30T10:35:30","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T11:35:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shahed.news\/en\/?p=1359"},"modified":"2021-11-30T10:35:30","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T11:35:30","slug":"herat-saffron-yield-cut-in-half-by-drought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shahed.news\/en\/2021\/11\/30\/herat-saffron-yield-cut-in-half-by-drought\/","title":{"rendered":"Herat Saffron Yield Cut in Half by Drought"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"related-post clearfix view view-article-single view-id-article_single view-display-id-article_body js-view-dom-id-729e240ccff49ecef352ceca33e2fc31e616503614396d7efb1967f96896761f\">\n<div class=\"view-content\">\n<div class=\"views-row\">\n<div class=\"entry-summary clearfix\">\n<div class=\"views-field views-field-field-article-body-summary-1 full-html-text\">\n<p><strong>Officials from Herat\u2019s agriculture department say that saffron production in the province has decreased this year compared to last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pir Mohammad Halimi, head of the agriculture department, said due to the drought and lack of water saffron fields in the province have been less productive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround 10 (metric) tons of saffron have been harvested this year and are expected to increase in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some farmers in Herat province said that last year they harvested more than 20 metric tons of saffron, but this year due to the drought they harvested only 10 tons, which is a 50% decrease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompared to last year, and due to the drought and low rainfall, our product has decreased a lot,\u201d said Abdul Ahmad, a farmer.<\/p>\n<p>The National Saffron Workers Union (NSWU) said that the price of saffron has tripled this year compared to last year, but Afghanistan\u2019s saffron exports are still stalled. According to the union, since the political change in August 15 saffron exports have been halted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the political change in the country, there has been no way out to export our products and this is a problem,\u201d said Abdul Shukoor Ahrari, head of the union.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, during the saffron harvesting season, a temporary job is provided for hundreds of women and girls and most of the products is collected by them. The women and girls said they are happy that they have a job and can help their family financially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very good for us economically. In the morning we go to school and when we come back from school we clean saffron flowers,\u201d said Saliha Ahmadi, a saffron worker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very good for us, so that we can have an income. And through this we can solve our families\u2019 financial problems,\u201d said Hayedah, a worker in a saffron field.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, women and girls have very significant role in the processing and preparation of saffron in Herat province. Many processing factories are run by women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the men are unemployed, this is a very good job for us. Through this we can solve both our own problems and our family\u2019s problems,\u201d said Shabana Nazif, a saffron processor.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics, more than 90% of the country&#8217;s saffron is harvested in Herat, which for the third time has been selected as the best saffron in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The International Taste &amp; Quality Institute in the Belgian capital of Brussels named Afghanistan&#8217;s saffron the best in the world in 2015, after sampling around 300 kinds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-blog-meta\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Officials from Herat\u2019s agriculture department say that saffron production in the province has decreased this year compared to last year.
