According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Ali S., a Danish citizen, faces charges of espionage, attempted murder, attempted aggravated arson, and sabotage. His alleged Afghan accomplice, Tawab M., has been charged with attempted murder.<\/p>\n
German prosecutors said Ali S. conducted surveillance as part of an alleged plot to assassinate Volker Beck, president of the German-Israeli Society and a former Green Party member of the German parliament.<\/p>\n
He is also accused of gathering intelligence on Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, as well as two Jewish-owned grocery stores in Berlin, in preparation for planned arson attacks.<\/p>\n
According to German prosecutors, Ali S. received instructions in early 2025 from the Quds Force, the overseas operations branch of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/p>\n
The two suspects have remained in pretrial detention since being arrested in Denmark last year and extradited to Germany.<\/p>\n
Mareike Frantsen, spokesperson for the Hamburg court, told AFP that Volker Beck attended the opening hearing under police protection.<\/p>\n
She added that after the indictment was read, both defendants exercised their legal right to remain silent and declined to make any statements.<\/p>\n
When the charges were announced in May, Volker Beck called on the German government to expel Iran’s ambassador as well as officials from the country’s consular missions.<\/p>\n
He said, “The lives of Jews and support for the Jewish and democratic State of Israel have repeatedly been threatened with murder and attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran on German soil.”<\/p>\n
In July 2025, following Ali S.’s arrest in Denmark, Germany’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin to lodge an official protest.<\/p>\n
After formal charges were filed against the two men last month, the Iranian Embassy in Berlin rejected the allegations in a statement, describing them as “baseless claims made at the instigation of Iran’s enemies.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
