Afghanistan Ranked Seventh Least Peaceful Country in the Global Peace Index 2026

Afghanistan has been ranked as the seventh least peaceful country in the world in the 2026 Global Peace Index, according to a report released on Thursday by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

The report assessed 163 countries and territories worldwide and found that Afghanistan remains among the seven lowest-ranked nations in terms of peace and security.

According to the index, only South Sudan, Israel, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Russia ranked lower than Afghanistan in the global standings.

The report noted that 99 of the 163 countries surveyed experienced a decline in their level of peace, while 62 countries recorded improvements.

It also found that 119 countries are less peaceful today than they were in 2008, highlighting a continued global deterioration in peace and security.

The Global Peace Index identified armed conflict as one of the primary drivers behind the ongoing decline in global peace.

Regionally, the report stated that after Nepal, the largest deteriorations in peace scores were recorded in Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, and Tanzania.

While some countries registered modest improvements, the report emphasized that these gains have not been sufficient to reverse the broader global trend of declining peace.

According to the findings, Afghanistan continues to rank among the countries with the lowest levels of peace in the world.
