Death Toll from Nuristan Floods Rises to 23; More Than 100 Still Missing
Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, currently under Taliban control, says the death toll from the floods in Nuristan has risen to 23, while more than 100 people remain missing.
Taj Mohammad Hemat, the deputy spokesperson for the authority, said in a video message on Tuesday (July 21) that the bodies of 15 victims have so far been recovered, and search operations are still ongoing.
He added that the floods completely destroyed seven houses and partially damaged 23 others. In Parun city, 70 shops and 11 hotels were either completely or partially damaged, while 40 vehicles were destroyed.
Heavy rainfall triggered the floods in Nuristan on Monday. Roads leading to Parun have also been damaged, making it difficult for rescue teams and emergency aid to reach the affected areas.
