Car Attack on Crowd in France; Two Afghan Nationals Killed

French media have reported that two Afghan nationals were killed and nine others injured after a car was driven into a crowd in Normandy, northwestern France.

According to Le Monde, police said the incident occurred late Wednesday in the port city of Caen, Normandy, following an altercation, and was not believed to have been motivated by terrorism.

Police said that after the suspect was attacked by several people outside a bar in the port area, he returned in his vehicle, drove into a bus lane opposite Caen station, and deliberately drove toward the men and other people who were at the station.

The local prosecutor’s office said there was no terrorist motive, although an investigation into the incident has only recently begun.

According to French authorities, the suspect is legally residing in France, has no known links to intelligence services, and had no previous criminal record.

Police confirmed that two Afghan men, aged 35 and 28, were killed in the incident. The injured victims, aged between 17 and 35, are of various nationalities, including French, Egyptian and Bangladeshi.
