Biden to Ghani: The partnership between Afghanistan and the United States is not ending.
In a meeting with President Ghani on Friday, US President Joe Biden promised that the two countries would have “sustainable” cooperation.
Meanwhile, US troops are leaving Afghanistan, and the Taliban have stepped up their attacks in recent days and taken control of more parts of the country.
Mr. Ghani traveled to Washington with Abdullah Abdullah, chairman of the Supreme National Reconciliation Council. They first met with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon and then headed to the White House to meet with Biden. The president said his country was continuing to help Afghanistan, but stressed that it was time for its troops to leave.
“The people of Afghanistan must decide for themselves their own future,” Biden told reporters shortly before meeting with Ghani and Abdullah.
United States has already decided to end its 20-year military presence in Afghanistan before 9/11.
Ghani also met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican lawmakers. He also met with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday.
