Abdul Ahad Momand, Afghanistan’s First Astronaut, Passes Away
Abdul Ahad Momand, Afghanistan’s first astronaut, has passed away at the age of 67 in Germany.
According to his family, Mr. Momand died today (Sunday, June 21) after a long battle with cancer.
In 1988, Mr. Momand flew aboard the Soyuz TM-6 mission with Soviet cosmonauts to the Mir Space Station, becoming the first Afghan to travel into space.
He and his fellow crew members spent 8 days, 20 hours, and 26 minutes in space.
Abdul Ahad Momand was born in 1959 in the Andar district of Ghazni Province. Since 2003, he had been living in Stuttgart, Germany.
