US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said his country will provide about $266 million in aid to Afghanistan.

Mr Blinken said on Friday that American people were helping Afghanistan’s international humanitarian partners to support some 18 million people in need in Afghanistan, especially those displaced.

He tweeted that, For many years, the United States has prioritized support for Afghan returnees, refugees, and displaced persons. $266 million in new U.S. humanitarian assistance is the latest concrete example of our deep commitment to a peaceful, stable future for Afghanistan and its people.

The Secretary of State also stated in a statement that the new US $266 million package of US humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan will assist Afghanistan’s international partners in providing shelter, livelihood opportunities, emergency food assistance, water and health care.

Meanwhile, he called on the Afghan government and Taliban to step up their efforts to reach a political agreement and a ceasefire so that refugees and displaced persons can return to their homes.
With the announcement of a new $266 million package, total US humanitarian aid to Afghanistan has reached $3.9 billion since 2002.
